Violence Real and Fictive

Yes, as you know from yesterday’s post, I am one of the people who contributed to the ratings success of Homeland (though I’ve found Dexter too graphic and disturbing to sustain my interest over the years).

Why do violent shows draw some of us who are repelled by “real” violence?  I’ve been thinking about a post on the coverage of the Connecticut school shooting and how I (unsuccessfully) coped with it.  I’ll get to that after I finish grading the last of the papers for my seminar Culture and the Sitcom – and irony that is not lost on me because life these last few days has been anything but a comedy.
