PLAYING FOR KEEPS

Sometimes, especially when there is a lot of bad news in the real world, a genre picture can be just the ticket to relieve anxiety and comfort with pretty people and predictable (happy) outcomes.

I indulged in that experience earlier in the week by seeing the romantic comedy (that is exactly as it appears in the preview trailers) Playing For Keeps.

There is absolutely no reason for me to tell you anything about this film.  You already know everything there is to know.

Oh, except maybe one thing.  Why are there so many names in such a forgettable picture?  Forgettable is not a criticism.  The movie is pleasant enough and pretty enough and exhibits some craft like the studio product of days gone by, and maybe I just answered my own question.

For Uma Thurman, Dennis Quaid, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jessica Biel, Gerard Butler, and familiar faces if not “names” James Tupper and Judy Greer, it is a job.
