BLACK-ISH

During over two months so far of living in Copenhagen, I’ve turned the TV on in the apartment where I’m staying less than a half dozen times.

All of the interesting programs are Danish (which I do not understand), and the American and British imports (subtitled in Danish, of course) are shows I’ve already seen or would not watch at home.

In case inquiring minds want to know, there is a Say Yes To The Dress Danmark. I know because I saw a promo, which is about as close as I’ll get to this show here or at home.

St. Patrick’s Day

I opened my eyes this morning, recollected that I should wear a green turtleneck today, and started thinking about what films or movies would be the best to watch today (if I didn’t have so much work to do!).

When I think of Irish (or Irish-themed) films, I think of Ryan’s Daughter (too sad), The Quiet Man (too disturbing in terms of sanctified domestic violence), The Hand that Shakes the Barley (not quite right for this moment), Hunger (no green inside the prison), and a bunch of others that also seem not quite right to celebrate the green.

Norwegian Lead Up to Eurovision

Last Saturday night, I was hosted in a Swedish home where wonderful food and terrific company won out over watching Melodifestivalen — Sweden’s televised competition leading up to the finals on Eurovision.

Tonight, I’m in Oslo.

Festival Indeed

When I travel, I love to go to the movies in different countries, and that’s an easy leap to make because there are screenings of English-language films and even some screenings of films with English subtitles most of the places I go.

What’s not so easy is for me to get insights into the television scene in countries where English is not the official language. After all, why would I want to watch an American series or a UK import (with subtitles) that I wouldn’t watch when at home?

This week is a treat in an unexpected way. Two of my long-time friends came to Copenhagen as a springboard for us to travel to Sweden and Norway during my spring break.
