Atlanta

If you haven’t been watching Donald Glover’s breakout show Atlanta, you should.

I recorded the second season while away last semester, and have been enjoying a binge-worthy catchup this week.

Yesterday I got up to the penultimate episode of the season, “FUBU,” and couldn’t delete the episode even after completing the season finale.

This flashback episode depicting a humiliating event during Earn’s middle school years is one of the finest episodes of television I have seen. (Glover plays the adult character, and Alkoya Brunson as Young Earn.)

Who among us cannot relate to classmate cruelty, either directed at us or others at school? The episode works perfectly well as a standalone. It would be formidable as a short film.

But, it’s more than that, too.

The fact that the episode sets up a situation that occurs at the end of the season finale–something that has been building throughout the second season of the series–is part of the brilliance of the show.

And, make no mistake about it, Atlanta is brilliant.
