Transgressive Teachers

Looking at Art Cinema Series

Hope to see you at a series I’m curating for aperture cinema the last Saturday in April and the first two in May; there we can watch and discuss teachers who “cross the line” in different ways.

These films are challenging and should lead to great discussion, which means we will learn a lot together.

The latest edition of my book The Hollywood Curriculum: Teachers in the Movies contains a new chapter about transgressive teachers.

After writing about depictions of educators in popular culture for nearly 25 years, I found this material the most difficult to confront and analyze (specifically writing about teachers who have sexual relationships with their students).

These stories are challenging but very important because of the complex role media texts play in both reflecting and constructing culture.

We can talk about this (and whatever you want to discuss!) in more detail over breakfast before the movies and spirited conversation afterward…

  1. Thanks, Chad! I’m hoping you’ll be there to help me keep the conversation lively. Will you please help spread the word at UNCG and with your former colleagues in Forsyth County?
