PITCH PERFECT

Rainy Sunday afternoons are perfect days for a matinee.  Okay, that’s right.  You’ve got me.  Everyday is perfect for a matinee to me.

Today I took a close friend out to lunch and a movie as a belated birthday celebration, and she chose Pitch Perfect.

From the preview trailers, I knew it could be a fun, guilty pleasure movie, or it could be a yawn.

I’m happy to report that the performances are good (Anna Kendrick, Skylar Astin, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, and the hilarious Rebel Wilson), the music had me tapping my feet from time-to-time, and there are some funny lines to balance the tender moments.

The story? College a cappella groups are very serious about winning competitions, and…well, what else do you really need to know?

Did I mention that I’m listening to Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” while I write this?

So romantic in a cheesy-but-sweet-80s-teenpic kind of way.

I love that some of my favorite films of the 80s are featured in Pitch Perfect even if one of them is an oblique reference…and this movie may be predictable and formulaic but is still good enough that you won’t have to feel guilty about counting it a viewing pleasure.

What’s wrong with having fun at the movies?

You know what?  I’m going to listen to “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” at least one more time…and remember how the big reveal scene featuring it (not really a spoiler) gave me goosebumps (really) and made me break out into a big smile (also true).

Hope springs eternal…or something like that.
