I’ve been thinking…what if cable news channels enacted a new policy.Wouldn’t it be nice if regular commentators (pundits on retainer who turn up over and over again on panels) couldn’t sign such a contract until they had five years distance from formal affiliation with a campaign or government post?

I’m not talking about special guests on news programs–newsmakers–but the slew of commentators-for-hire who fail to provide a long view or even a reasonable perspective separate from their own naked self-interest.

What good is that? It only contributes to polarization and diminishes public discourse.
