The Great Victory of the Government Forces, Shōkōsai Kunihiro

WFU Conference

“The Civil Wars of Japan’s Meiji Restoration & National Reconciliation: Global Historical Perspectives”

The conference focused on two internal military conflicts of the Restoration period. Participants explored first the Boshin War (1868-1869), when factions in northern Japan fiercely battled and eventually lost to an alliance that had overthrown the feudal government in a January 1868 coup. Conference participants also discussed events related to the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877 in which Saigō Takamori, a leader of the new central government created after 1868, led rebel armies in an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the central regime and repeal earlier reforms.
